Myths, Legends and Faerie Tales

Decision Oil on Canvas 64 x 92.5 IN
To Our Collectors and Friends:
ARTFunatic is pleased to bring you its inaugural group show, Myths, Legends and Faerie Tales, at Mishin Fine Arts who graciously provided their beautiful gallery to allow us to bring you this collection of over 50 incredible paintings of internationally acclaimed artists primarily from Barcelona, Spain: Gabriel Picart, Fran Recacha, Carmen Giráldez and Enric Aromi. As great painter-print makers of the 20th century in Spain, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Salvador Dali had the influence of great master painters that came before them to study, so too our talented artists today have had the opportunity to study and observe the style and techniques of these same great Spanish master painters of the 16th to 19th centuries: Francisco de Goya, José de Ribera, Bartolomé Murillo, Sorolla, Velázquez, Zurbarán and many others whose works adorn museum walls throughout the world.

We have included a special sneak preview of two additional fine painters, Saturno Butto from a small seaside village just outside Venice, Italy and Frank Licsko, a Hungarian-born American. While Saturno Butto and Frank Licsko are not from Barcelona, their work has been included due to their imagery which is consistent with the theme of this exhibition. They too have experienced firsthand the desire and motivation to create modern day imagery inspired from European Mythology and Legends of the Old World. All of these fine painters have contributed works that give us the opportunity for in-depth studies of our own worship of these heroes and anti-heroes – the connection we feel to a time that no longer exists except in folklore or legend. All of our artists have shared with us glimpses of historical moments, in a time when a light breeze blown from the heavens or great storms blew from the mouth of Zeus would carry legendary heroes and mythical creatures across the sea to new lands. Artists bring us extraordinary imagery into our everyday lives.
It is for critics and historians to decide what works by which artists merit our attention from past periods – however, we get to decide today which artists will be collected and treasured and respected for the next generation to enjoy; just as we enjoy those great works in our museums today, collected by our fathers and grandfathers who not so long ago collected the art of the 20th century which now commands enormous prices at auction houses around the world.
Finally, I must acknowledge the collaborative efforts of Rosemary Do, Amy Do, Gabriel Picart, Rosa Anguas, who helped tremendously and worked tirelessly on this catalog: writing, editing, and formatting for this flip book, as well as a printed version. I’d also like to thank Larisa Mishina who partnered with ARTFunatic to provide the perfect space to see the entire collection of Myths, Legends and Faerie Tales in one very large gallery space. As such, I would like to tell you a little bit about Larisa and Mishin Fine Arts which is an excellent gallery that boasts a collection of Russian museum-quality artwork, 20 years in the making. The fact that she spent her early years of her fine art career in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia, which houses the second largest collection of 16th to 19th century Spanish art in the world is indeed an amazing twist of fate. What better place than Mishin Fine Arts, with an elegant and knowledgeable owner exposed to this same spectacular collection of Spanish works, to have a show which owes much to the influence of these same great Spanish Painters of the 16th to 19th centuries.
